Improving College Football Running Back Drills

Hand off drill

Running backs should constantly practice the hand off. A simple drill for a hand off is to line up all of your running backs in two lines facing each other in what we will call line A and Line B. At the coaches signal player A leaves line A running with the football towards line B. At the same time that the first player leaves player B leaves his line towards player A, as they pass each other in the middle player A hands off the football to player B. At the point of the hand off another player leaves line A and runs towards player B, who hands off the ball to the new player. This drill should perform in a seamless motion. It is an effective drill to teach handoff skills and help running backs achieve higher accuracy and consistency.

Ball handling Drill: Hot potato

This drill is used to increase players ball handling skills on the field. The secret to this drill is having the ball constantly moving around and from hand to hand. The drill is simple and starts by having the player pass the ball around their head, torso, arms, knees, and even between their feet from one hand to another in constant motion.

Coaches can mix up the drill by shouting out body parts that the players will have to start circling with the football; they can also reverse the direction that the ball is traveling by calling, reverse. This change of motion will keep players from falling asleep, and ensure that you are developing handling skills and not just muscle memory.

At the very end of the drill the players will do several simple drops. The player will drop the ball and quickly pick it up again. It will also help to change the hand that the players uses to pick up the ball to ensure both hands are learning this technique.

Water on and off the field

Drinking plenty of water is all it takes to prevent dehydration, and thus should be an important part of football practices. Make sure that during the football practice players have their water bottles handy and are drinking often. Times have changed and coaches these days should be aware of hydration needs and not use water as a reward, or withhold it as a punishment. When players are hydrated and energized they will practice harder and learn more.

Secrets to a good hand off

Whether you are a quarterback, running back, or a player that at anytime will receive a hand off you need to realize the basics of a great hand off. Lets look at a simple hand off between a quarterback and a running back to point out the fundamentals of this skill. A good hand off starts with the running back giving a target to the quarterback, this can be done in the running back keeping his arms flat against his body, one arm low and the other high creating an open square or target around the chest for the quarterback to slide the ball in. When the running back receives the football he clamps down both arms hard on the football to protect it. Now that the running back has the ball when he leaves the quarterback he should remain low to the ground in order to react quickly on the field.

Football Of Greek And Roman Periods

Football, which essentially involves kicking a ball and negotiating it to the goalpost using only the feet – has been a popular sport for several centuries in many countries across the world. The game is known by a variety of names – rugby, soccer, football etc

During ancient times, the Greeks and the Romans played many types of ball games and a few prominent ones resembled the present-day football. Though there is not much of recorded history of Greeks playing football, it is seen that the game of Episkyro which is similar to football was regularly played throughout Greece as early as 800 BCE.

However, the Episkyro game permitted the use of hands as well, which means the game was more in the nature of rugby than football. But the other features of Episkyro were in accordance with football. For instance, the size of the playing field and each team having twelve players were in accordance with the latter day football.

Historians of sports suggest that it was not so much Episkyro but another Greek ball game Harpastron that was the forerunner to football. Strangely, the Greek word Harpastron means handball and not football. The fact is the Greeks did not popularize the game much in their own country but allowed it to develop in a big way in Rome.

There is evidence to suggest that Romans borrowed the basic concept of both the Greek games of Episkyro and Harpastron and evolved a new a game called Harpastum. They also insisted on kicking the ball and using all other parts of the body during the game except the hands. The Roman game of Harpastum can be truly considered as the forerunner to football.

Although it is difficult to state in a pinpointed way when the Romans started playing Harpastum, it can be safely presumed that they must have introduced the game after the Romans conquered Greece in 146 BCE. Harpastum principally resembled the rugby style of the game and it appears it was played even by Julius Caesar and his generals for improving the overall physical fitness of the Roman Army.

It is known that the Harpastum ball was made from leather skin and stuffed with chopped sponges or animal fur and was much smaller measuring 8 inches in diameter. They used a smaller rectangular pitch and the number of players in each team varied and occasionally, they played even with a hundred players to a side. Harpastum was indeed a fast and exciting game that often turned violent leading to even physical assault.

Harpastum soon gained immense popularity and became known in almost all European countries where the then powerful Roman army went. In the year 1968, excavators discovered near Gardun Trilj a Roman tomb with a picture of a boy holding a ball that resembles a football. The International Football Association has acknowledged this finding to be the first artifact of the football in the world.

So, it can be said, without fear of contradiction, that it was the Romans who were largely responsible for introducing football in other countries around the world – particularly England where the game developed into the modern day football.

Wheelchair users call for better football access

Going to the football is a weekly pass time for the more hardcore football fans. It can prove to be an expensive hobby but one which real football fans wouldn’t miss out on. A football clubs grounds are a busy place on a match day and people with disabilities can find it difficult to get the right level of access that they need.

Disability campaigners are looking to have improvements made by the SPL to wheelchair access facilities at football grounds. All Scottish Premier League footbal clubs meet the minimum legal standard of accessiblity but campaigners say that they are missing out on the chance of enticing new fans to come to games due to the current condition of facilities.

Campaigners accept that football clubs have made progress in recent years in improving access but are still critical that a lot more needs to be done. The chief executive of Capability Scotland had this to say on the matter: -It appears that the amount of accessible seating at football grounds does not currently reflect the needs of Scotland’s 100,000 registered wheelchair users. Improving accessibility for disabled people is good news for all fans who may experience mobility problems at some stage in their life.-

Campaigners are looking for extra wheelchair seats to be made available in sheltered areas of the grounds. Disabled football fans would also like to see food outlets become more wheelchair friendly. The number of disabled parking spaces is another aspect that has been deemed as insufficient in many cases.

SPL clubs are said to be conducting a review of the disabled access to their facilities in order to accommodate as many fans as possible.

Puma Football Kits Outsell Nike & Adidas At World Cup

The 2010 World Cup is fast approaching with South Africa being less than a year away from kick off now and the quest from the major sports brand to produce the best selling football shirts at the tournament has already begun. More and more football kit brands are coming on the scene but there are still 3 names that dominate over most other Adidas, Nike and Puma.

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany Puma were the best represented company with 11 countries wearing their jerseys in comparison Nikes 8 and Adidass 6. Obviously it is very much dependent on which international teams qualify as to who will be best represented but this is a surprising result with Adidas and Nike regarded as being the top football kit suppliers.

Since the 2006 World Cup finals, there have been a number of transfers in the football kit world. The Russian national team football shirts are now manufactured by Adidas, having stolen them from Nike. Similarly, the Mexican jerseys traditionally one of Nikes strongest selling strips has been snapped up by Adidas. The German sports brand have also stolen a mach on Puma by acquiring the sponsorship of the Paraguayan national team.

A major advantage that Puma have over their rivals is their strong relationship with the African countries. At the 2006 World Cup Puma manufactured shirts for 4 out of the 5 African countries that qualified, Tunisia, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Togo, and look set to continue their strong relationship with Africa, having secured kit sponsorship of the African Nations Cup winners Egypt as well as Cameroon and Senegal, both of whom have made a major impact at World Cup Finals in the last 10 years.

The final kit manufacturers for the 2010 World Cup have yet to be decided by a lot of countries as they will be bringing out a new football shirt for the tournament so a combination of that and the uncertainty over exactly who will qualify means we cant predict the dominant brand for next year quite yet.

The top team that Puma produce their shirts for is Italy and they will be hoping that they can reproduce the success they achieved in 2006 with another World Cup win. The win in 2006 was Italy’s 4th time of winning the tournament.

Although Puma dominated the number of teams at the last World Cup, Adidas were the only one of the top brands to have a presence at every game as they were official sponsors of the tournament and provided the World Cup ball.

They also represented hosts Germany who were the only team who refused to let their players wear boots from a different manufacturer so were Adidas head to toe.

The race for dominance has certainly begun as we start to prepare for the final round of qualifying for the World Cup finals which will determine which brands football kits are the most seen and most purchased at next years World Cup finals.

One key factor that determines how popular the football shirts sales are is the style of shirt printing. For each major tournament, the brands launch a new style of printing which they will use for the next two years. Coming up with a unique, original style can make a huge difference to the volume of sales a jersey makes, particularly when a country has a star player like Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Over the years, we have had some unique attempts such as Nikes front circle at Euro 2004, Puma’s lower case prints at the 2006 World Cup and Adidas famous three stripe football shirt name and number lettering. It remains to be seen which will be the cool style in 2010.
